SAMWOY Shares Video For Upcoming Title Album

SAMWOY (FHANG, Half Moon Run) has shared the title track to his forthcoming debut solo album, Awkward Party, which is set for release on June 2nd via Hidden Ship Records. The video was filmed by Gus Englehorn, Estee Preda, and SAMWOY and shot at Hidden Ship Studios in Montreal.

The video was inspired the Rothschild family surrealist ball from the 70’s. “I wondered what this ball would look like if it was attended by people living in different versions of obscurity rather than being attended by the elite of the world.”

“I have always had a fascination towards masks,” explains SAMWOY. “Throughout my life I feel I have always hid behind such a huge variety of masks. I can see that now. I feel this album has really allowed me the opportunity to reflect on my past self and have had a chance to sit down with 17 year old Sam and work some things out. I hope I can continue to use my art to help myself confront past traumas and peel back all the layers of masks I have hoarded over the years.  I hope everyone can find something as meaningful as I find creating.”

SAMWOY is the moniker of Montreal-based songwriter and producer Sam Woywitka. Through the relentless collaging of voices and moods on the album Woywitka hoped to conjure up the dissociativestates he experienced following a near fatal car wreck.  Following the crash and grueling rehabilitation, Woywitka developed a sense of urgency in developing and putting forward a vision of recovery, creating beauty out of darkness. Taken as a whole, SAMWOY’S command over the disparate elements that are wrangled together here puts into motion a dazzling beast of an album. He is joined on album by some of Montreal’s top musical guns—including Mishka Stein on the bass, Robbie Kuster on drums, and Erika Angell on vocals.

“The Awkward Party was held on one random night, Underneath a sliver of cold moonlight The guests arrived in spectacular attire, masks of all colours to hide their desire The colours around them began to swirl and dance, The guests started drinking to hypnotic trance. The room transformed into a wonderland, As the guests surrendered to their enchanted command Even them, celebrating in the tallest towers, anyone can be swept away by a psychedelic power”

The Montreal-based songwriter and JUNO award winning producer, Woywitka is also half of the genre-busting electronic duo FHANG with bass legend Mishka Stein. Woywitka’s production highlights include working alongside Grammy-winning producers DJ Khalil and Chin Injeti. Woywitka won a Juno award for his work on Half Moon Run’s 2019 album A Blemish in the Great Light.
