Darkest Light; Strobobean racks and stacks their favorite shoegaze and post-punk cuts

Following the release of their new single, “Walking Alone,” Cincinnati post-punk, shoegaze trio Strobobean are set to head out on a stretch of dates throughout the Midwest and southern states (below).

Since their inception in summer 2018, Strobobean has created a buzz playing shows around the Midwest in support of their debut EP, Winter, opening for bands like Habibi, And the Kids, and Leggy. “Walking Alone” and its b-side “Ghost” offer a taste of what is to come on Strobobean’s debut LP, expected in early 2020.

Before their impending trip, Ghettoblaster caught up with the band to ask about their favorite shoegaze and post-punk songs. This is how they racked and stacked.

Stef Chura – “Method Man” (Midnight, 2019) When I was on tour with Leggy earlier this year, they played this song in the van at least once a day and I became obsessed.

– Katrina

No Joy – “Moon in My Mouth” (More Faithful, 2015) This song is so pretty, simple, and creative — the whole album is great.

– Katrina

SASAMI – “Not the Time” (SASAMI, 2019) I like this song for its classic shoegaze sounds with a sunny upbeat bop to it — and I love the floaty feel of the instrumental break.

– Katrina

Suuns – “Edie’s Dream” (Images du Futur, 2013) I love all of the subtle twists and turns this track takes.

– Katrina

Exploded View – “Lost Illusions” (Exploded View, 2016) I was at a bar in Indianapolis when the bartender put this album on and I’ve been obsessed with it since. Dark, spacey grooves full of attitude.

– Katrina

Blouse – “Happy Days” (Imperium, 2013) This song makes me feel like I’m sky-diving in slow motion.

– Katrina

Shana Falana – “Darkest Light” (Go Higher, 2019)

– Brianna

My Bloody Valentine – “She Found Now” (MBV, 2013) Maybe an overly obvious pick, but the album is really great in general and makes something really nice and fresh from just about the same sounds as their stuff from 20 years prior.

– Jake

Deerhunter – “Leather Jacket II” (Monomania, 2013) I really like the recording on this one, it’s basically a collage of all these super brutal sounds and kooky part doubling and delay and it rocks really, really hard.

– Jake

Parquet Courts – “Stoned and Starving” (Light Up Gold, 2013) This is just a really catchy song for one thing, cool guitar hooks. And it’s a simple song but the chords they use are really nice, lush even.

– Jake
