Superchunk Shares “February Punk”

Superchunk is set to release Misfits & Mistakes: Singles, B-sides & Strays 2007–2023 on October 27. Today’s dive into the collection’s 50 songs yields “February Punk.” A prime cut of “how-have-I-not-heard-this-before” Superchunk, “February Punk” was the B-side of Majesty Shredding’s lead single, “Digging for Something.” No longer bound to that 7-inch’s 1,000 copies, it is now available wherever you listen to music, ready to become your new favorite Superchunk deep cut!

“It’s about it never being too late to get into cool stuff,” Mac McCaughan says of “February Punk,” which was among the first songs Superchunk recorded with Majesty Shredding co-producer Scott Solter who “helped us find new space and depth in our sound that we hadn’t had before without losing the energy the songs used to have.”

In the tradition of Superchunk singles compilations, Misfits & Mistakes houses non-album tracks, demos, and cover songs sourced from 7-inches, compilations, and previously internet-exclusive artifacts. Featuring extensive liner notes by McCaughan (with additional notes from Laura Ballance), the collection tells the story of each release, from why they chose to cover songs by The Misfits, The Cure, Destiny’s Child, and Bananarama, to working with collaborators like Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee), Jane Wiedlin (The Go-Go’s), Eleanor Friedberger, Damian Abraham (Fucked Up), Norman Blake and Raymond McGinley (Teenage Fanclub), and more!

Superchunk is in the midst of touring the east coast with Aussie punk superstars Cable Ties, wrapping this Saturday at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City. They will play a trio of home-state shows in October, including Durham’s That Music Fest on October 14, before traveling to Europe for the first time since 2018 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of On the Mouth.
