Video Premiere: Gabe Bernini, "Caramel"

You might know Gabe Bernini as a former member of LuxDeluxe (Old Flame Records), as a touring member of Deer Tick, or from his previous solo records. His forthcoming record, Sweeties, takes glammy garage pop in the vein of King Tuff and marries it to rootsy power pop like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Sweeties is Bernini’s first record for Dadstache, and his fourth overall, recorded amidst a time of positive change in Bernini’s life. After leaving his previous band of eight years, the NRBQ-indebted LuxDeluxe, then heading out on the road as a keyboardist with Deer Tick in support of their records Volume I and Volume II, Bernini began working on records that would take shape as Gabe’s Band.

Sweeties started as an attempt to write more guitar oriented hard rock songs, but slowly Bernini’s influences and impulses crept in again. “As I kept recording the hard rock record, my more natural voice and recording decisions started to appear again,” he says. “By the end I realized I had just made another Gabe record but maybe with more loud guitars.”

Sweeties was then shelved until after the end of Gabe’s Band when Bernini left his hometown in Western Massachusetts for Los Angeles. Thematically it feels appropriate that Bernini chose to release Sweeties upon moving to LA – the record captures the fiery feelings of a new crush, a fresh optimism from someone new entering your life, or perhaps the optimism of moving to a new city after a long time in one place.

Today, Ghettoblaster has the pleasure of premiering the confetti-filled video for the album’s first single, “Caramel.”
