Homeschool Shares “Hanger-on”

It has been a tumultuous year for Homeschool, the solo project of NYC singer-songwriter Tom D’Agustino (he/they). As a newcomer to life as an independent artist with unfettered control of the creative process, Homeschool has spent the past year experimenting with music and masculinity, inching closer to what they feel is an “authentic” way of being in the world. As a newcomer to acting, D’Agustino is reveling in the opportunity to explore the worlds of different characters, to “experiment with who I’m able to become,” he says

Now, D’Agustino continues the Homeschool canon with the arrival of their long-awaited brand new EP entitled Just Now, out today via all DSPs. As a follow-up to the EP’s lead-up singles  — “Bound To Be,” “Loving You To Death,” “My Only Enemy” — today, D’Agustino shares the record’s final single and focus track, “Hanger-on,” alongside an accompanying music video directed, filmed, and edited by Brian Paccione (Sufjan Stevens, Pinegrove).

Wrote D’Agustino of the EP’s final single:

“‘Hanger-on’ is for those people that feel like the loser in a relationship, that fear maybe they’re just along for the ride, that they don’t have much to offer. The repetitive chord progression, and the looped drum beat, make me think of the endless march my self-deprecating thoughts can take sometimes. And then the chorus comes and the mood breaks, a bit of clarity is restored as I remind myself that I am more than what I am afraid of. I can offer something beautiful to my partner and to those that I care about, I can offer commitment and I can offer love. Being there for people is more valuable than any kind of success I can think of, and I think the heart of the song reinforces that idea.”
