Fucked Up And The Halluci Nation Team On “Electroshock”

Fucked Up and The Halluci Nation kick off their 10-date co-headlining Here’s the Unity Tour of Canada on May 19 at Victoria, BC’s Capital Ballroom. The tour brings Fucked Up’s incendiary, genre-bending brand of hardcore, The Halluci Nation’s blend of electronic and First Nations dance music, and the spectacle of professional wrestling together under one roof. Throughout the shows, the bands will be joined by independent wrestling superstar Daniel Makabe, who will take on opponents in matches on stage and around the venue inspired by Latin American street wrestling!

To give you an idea of what these hardcore and electronic greats are capable of creating together musically, today they release a collaborative cover of Mexican punk legends Dangerous Rhythm’s “Electroshock.”

“It really does feel like we’re finding a way to bring people into our friendship,” Abraham continued. “There’s the stuff that we love, like wrestling, and then there’s the idea of communicating and being in one place and not forgetting about everything that’s going on in the world. But at the same time, you allow yourself permission to be joyful for a second, to experience our joy.”

According to Fucked Up’s Damian Abraham, the decision to record “Electroshock” came together organically, the kind of thing that happens when friends share music that’s exciting to them with each other.

“This is a song by a band someone told me was the second ever Mexican punk band,” Fucked Up’s Abraham said of “Electroshock.” “It’s a band I’ve always loved, and I sent it to Tim and Bear Witness [of The Halluci Nation] and they said, ‘Yeah, we can definitely hear something with this.’ I sent it to Fucked Up and we just kind of went from there. It was a song that was unfamiliar to most of Fucked Up, too, so we entered into the song with most of us having no real connection to or baggage attached to it. Our connection to it developed over working on the song together.”

“It took us pretty far out of our usual box,” Bear said. “It’s a really exciting thing for us to take on, not just because of the friendships involved, but because we’re looking at the way we present music and the way that we tour and how all of these things are changing for everyone. We’re doing that by getting together with a band that people wouldn’t necessarily expect us to and are offering something that has more than just surface-level stuff going on.”
