Deerhoof today debuted a karaoke-style video for new song “Singalong Junk” featuring Xenia Rubinos, along with a .PDF of its sheet music (LINK), from their new album Mountain Moves out now on Joyful Noise Recordings. In the spirit of the album’s collaborative origins, Deerhoof is encouraging fans to write and share their own original lyrics to “Singalong Junk.” Whether sharing via social media or uploading to YouTube, fans can tag their creation with #singalongjunk to be seen and/or heard by the band.
Rubinos says of the collaboration, “When Greg (Saunier) reached out to ask if I would sing a song on the new Deerhoof album I literally fell out of my seat. It was a surreal “am I dreaming?” moment. I got Greg’s email the night before leaving on a month-long national tour.” She adds, “The song was a unique challenge in that it was intended to be a karaoke-style choose your own words adventure. After many listens and a few performance attempts, I decided to approach it like a modern classical composition played by Deerhoof and sung by me.”
Of the recording process, Xenia explains, “I had 1 day off to split a drive between Houston & McAllen and everybody wanted to go to the beach. So I found this island on a list of Top 10 beaches nearby, Galveston Island, TX. Much to everyone’s surprise, we ended up sleeping just above these enormous oil rigs, which we later discovered is an oil rig museum. The various oil spills over the last years have rendered the beach unswimmable and mostly off limits. Needless to say, my crew wasn’t psyched about our dystopian beach vacation wasteland BUT I did get to record this song there!”
