Austin’s Killer Kaya Readies New Single ‘Dune Buggy’

Austin, Texas-based artists Killer Kaya releases its new single, “Dune Buggy” on October 2. “Dune Buggy” is the first of four upcoming single releases from the band. The track evokes the vastness of Western Saharan desert landscapes through fuzzed out psychedelic guitar, sweeping vocals, and atmospheric textures. Driven by a galloping rhythm that conjures images of crossing isolated sand dunes beneath sweeping winds, the track explores the tension between solitude and spatial expansiveness. Balancing heavy psych intensity with moments of light and openness, “Dune Buggy” delivers an immersive journey through sound, space, and landscape.

Pre-save it here.

The band synthesize a diverse sonic palette that draws as much from prog, stoner rock, latin jazz, dub, tropicalia, as it does the late-’60s sounds of Jefferson Airplane, Shocking Blue, Big Brother, Santana, and Curved Air.

Killer Kaya is an emerging psychedelic rock band known for its immersive live performances and distinctive sound.

Performing frequently at venues across Austin, including Hotel Vegas, Chess Club, Mohawk, and The 13th Floor, the band has steadily built a diverse and growing audience. Drawing from heavy psychedelic rock, vintage 1960s Indian and similar world psychedelia, Killer Kaya creates expansive, groove driven songs that bridge classic influences with a contemporary perspective, establishing the band as a distinctive voice in the city’s thriving psychedelic music scene.

Killer Kaya, have shared bills with a diverse list of established acts; Shuggie Otis, The Kills, Cat Power, Teenage Fanclub, Levitation Room, Sugar Candy Mountain, Bolero, Triptides, Spindrift, and The Strawberry Alarm Clock. Killer Kaya further carve out their niche when the vocals enter, unveiling the hypnotically droning, operatic, and instantly recognizable howl of classically trained lead singer Apoorva Chiplunkar. Shindig! magazine has compared her vocal style to Kate Bush and Klaus Nomi. Chiplunkar’s voice is an ethereal, haunting force of nature, capable of opening up the sky above an ancient Andean pyramid like a shaman calling down the spirits of ancestors thousands of generations removed, as well as those of future descendants traveling through the cosmos.

Killer Kaya’s members include: Vocalist Apoorva Chiplunkar, founding guitarist / keyboardist Zach Rengert, drummer Sal Villalobos, guitarist George Fox and bassist Pete Legasey (formerly of Beatnik Bandits).
