Everybody Must Get…; Dead Meadow's Jason Simon runs down his favorite 'stoner rock' albums

Dead Meadow released their eight album, The Nothing They Need, earlier this month via Xemu Records. To the surprise of no one who has encountered the band over their 20 year run, the album contains the band’s patented brand of massively fuzzy, metal-influenced, psych riff bliss. The band is currently on tour in support of the record and are enroute to the Levitation festival in Austin, Texas (dates below).
Ghettoblaster recently caught up with singer Jason Simon to ask about his favorite stoner rock records. What he gave us was his favorite albums to listen to stoned.
“Though most of these fall outside what is usually considered the ‘Stoner Rock,’ these are records that I’ve certainly spent many a stoned hour listening to…
Black Sabbath, Volume 4
Let us start where it all began. BLACK SABBATH! The first five records are all complete classics in my book, but even just for “Wheels of Confusion” and “Snowblind” this record tops the list.
Neil Young, On the Beach
Neil Young is all ‘stoner rock’ to me. Though it was a tough call to decide which is his most stoner record, something about the free flowing off the cuff nature of this record has always called to me.
Bo Hansson, Lord of the Rings
Another seminal record for the early Dead Meadow years. The other worldly vibes are heavy… a stoned journey to another realm.
Augustus Pablo, East of the River Nile
In essence, what is Reggae but the ultimate, the pinnacle of ‘stoner rock.’ Dubbed out grooves and Pablo’s always classic melodica conjure up vibes somewhere between Ancient Mesopotamia and Outer Space.
Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus, Love Thy Neighbor
Off the wall production, echo to the stars and back, tribal Nyabinghi style drumming all make this record a stoner’s delight. I love it.”
