Song Premiere: Adrian Cohen, "Not A Word"

16-year-old Adrian Cohen is a savant, piano phenom and inspired outsider artist. His whimsical, piano and synth-laden songs are the epitome of honesty and earnestness.
His sophomore LP Sticks and Stones (out June 24) is a fresh and quirky collection of eccentric piano-pop. Adrian’s ear for offbeat but ingratiating hooks will surprise and delight, as you find yourself humming bars from songs you heard for the first time just hours ago. There’s something undeniably special buried in these tracks, something that plays out with childlike glee.
At the center of Adrian’s music is his unique songwriting partnership with his creatively jocular father, Derek Cohen. The two work in the classic musician/lyricist songwriting tradition of Elton John and Bernie Taupin or Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, Derek providing the words, and Adrian the music. Derek’s playful, mercurial lyrics are inspired by everything from family vacations at The Vatican and Stonehenge to sitcom characters, medieval literature, board games, ancient cities, tech companies and destiny.
The duo works throughout the week, hunched over an old baby grand in their family living room in suburban Rhode Island. And then every Saturday, they drive to Providence to hole up in the studio with Sticks and Stones engineer Alex Krepkikh.
Sticks and Stones is Adrian’s follow-up to his 2015 LP There is No Tomorrow, which came in the wake of 2014 debut EP I Gotta Rock, which featured both covers and originals, and earned him three ballots at the Grammy Awards.
Today, Ghettoblaster has the pleasure to premiere “Not A Word,” which you can enjoy below:
