In certain circles of late nights and dubbed cassettes, Tim Krug is known simply as Halicon. It’s a moniker he’s donned since the mid-’90s for creating solo electronic music heavily inspired by artists and labels such as Autechre, Rephlex, Warp, Aphex Twin, and N5MD. Though his output has been sporadic over the past 20+ years, to say the least, he’s been consistently writing and recording and stockpiling tracks without a proper outlet or goal in mind, while publicly focusing more on his various indie rock (Oh Condor), synth-punk (Brainiac), and industrial bands (Hexadiode).
“The ongoing pandemic has brought me the time and inspiration to dig deep into the archives. I spent a good bit of time mining old hard drives, cassette tapes, floppies and zip disks to create a series of releases over 2020 and 2021 while I finish up an album of new material,” says Krug. “This was originally to be a kind of b-sides collection EP for a handful of songs I really liked, but were cut from the previous four releases due to time or flow, but as I worked through it… it took on a life of its own and grew into what feels to me more like a full and coherent album: Loner Veils. The album is twelve tracks spanning from 2002 to 2012. Some with fresh mixes, a few with added harmonies and other sonic flourishes, and still others left entirely as they were.”
All the current archival Halicon releases will also be available in a super limited five-cassette cox set, along with colorful inserts and liner notes, and all housed within a custom-designed 3D-printed box. This is a very DIY physical release, with each tape individually recorded and hand-stamped, and the boxes designed and printed in Dayton, Ohio. The covers were cut and assembled by hand as well, proper labor of love. Loner Veils and the box set see release March 4, 2022.
