Video Premiere | (halicon), ‘Cinnabar Feather’

In certain circles of late nights and dubbed cassettes, Tim Krug is known simply as (halicon). It’s a moniker he’s donned since the mid ’90s for creating solo electronic music heavily inspired by artists and labels such as Autechre, Rephlex, Warp, Aphex Twin, and N5MD.

Though his output has been sporadic over the past 20+ years, to say the least, he’s been consistently writing and recording and stockpiling tracks, while publicly focusing more on his various indie rock endeavors, including Brainiac and Oh Condor

However, Krug recently announced the return of (halicon) with the Relocation Spells effort —
six new tracks featuring hypnotic and organic abuse of analog machines to transmute chaos and dissociate to. Simply, it is meditative music for an unquiet mind.

“Lately, I have been experimenting with different ways to approach music, drifting a bit away from the grids of step sequencers, and structured, planned out songs in general,” Krug says.”Relying rhythmically on the Soma Labs Pulsar 23, and the Make Noise Strega, some of the beats contained here were created using only clock dividers, or envelope modulated arpeggiators, while others are the result of cv-patching feedback loops on the strega or utilizing envelope followers to slam down the pitch of oscillators.”

“Melodies are often played by meandering hands or built up from evolving chords by triggering complementary notes at random intervals,” he adds. “Which is to say these tracks each exist in a very specific moment in time. No sequence to save. No backup. No usb ports were harmed in the creation of this cassette.”

Relocation Spells sees release via Gamma Ray Gun records on June 20. Pre-order it here.
