Pelican Share “Autumn into Summer”

Ahead of the release of the deluxe reissue of Pelican’s The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw, out July 21st, the quartet are sharing the video for “Autumn Into Summer” directed by Rory Leydier. Originally released on the After The Ceiling Cracked DVD for Hydra Head Records in 2005, alongside live footage and interviews, the video now gets a full re-release with audio remixed by original engineer Greg Norman and remastered by Josh Bonati.

As visually stunning as it is subtly unnerving, Leydier’s video translates the track’s instrumental movements into an oblique, surrealist narrative constructed from animation and collaged film footage. Ghostly painted figures orbit each other’s lives, fading in and out of view, becoming increasingly incorporeal and hallucinatory as the track shifts from subtly and gentle gestures one moment to thunderous full-stomp ferocity the next.

On its original release, The Fire In Our Throats established Pelican as indisputable masters of their craft. Pelican’s ability to alchemize their influences into a sound so wholly original and then expand on that sound into a work of captivating beauty remains a marvel.  The genre-busting nature of the album’s melodicism and refined dynamics was a harbinger of things to come in a genre whose strict boundaries were rapidly being shattered.
