Grrrl Gang Share “Blue-Stained Lips

Indonesian trio Grrrl Gang recently announced the arrival of their full-length debut album, Spunky! (Green Island Music), to be released on September 22, 2023 in partnership with exclusive license in North, Central, and South America on Kill Rock Stars (pre-order). The album will also be released on Trapped Animal Records in the United Kingdom and European Union, and Big Romantic Records in Japan and Taiwan. Today Grrrl Gang are excited to share their new single and lyric video for “Blue-Stained Lips.”

The lyric video was directed by Carkultera Wage Sae and Yohanes Catur Nugroho as a sequel to Grrrl Gang’s other music videos, which Nadine Hanisya and Carkultera Wage Sae directed as Bathroom Girls. “It follows the story of Bella, the main character, on her journey throughout a night out. The video lyric is inspired by our post-night-out behavior, where we find ourselves just chilling in our room, browsing our phones, and checking updates on social media from both ourselves and others. We decided to create a visual style that resembles content viewed on our own laptop screens to further enhance the experience,” said Sae.

Written by Edo Alventa and Angeeta Sentana, the song tells about Sentana’s experience with her boyfriend who truly accepts her for who she is, flaws and all. “We were at a party one night, and I drank this blue cocktail, and it left a stain on my lips, making them blue. I thought I looked super ugly, but my boyfriend still thought I was perfect and kissed me, regardless. The line ‘Kiss me on my blue-stained lips’ is a metaphor for him liking me and accepting me for who I am” Sentana explained.

Lafa Pratomo, the in-demand producer, was brought in to help shape the ten tracks that make up Spunky! With a resume that includes the likes of the chanteuse Danilla and legendary singer-songwriter Iwan Fals, Pratomo might not seem the obvious choice to take the Grrrl Gang producer’s chair. But according to Rumandung, “In terms of production, this was something new for us by working with someone outside of Grrrl Gang’s comfort zone.” Indeed, Pratomo considerably beefs up Grrrl Gang’s sound – particularly Alventa’s guitar tones, Rumandung’s rumbling bass, and touring drummer Muhammad Faiz Abdurrahman’s muscular beats – while preserving the band’s signature raucous energy, catchy melodies, and Sentana’s attitude-filled, equal-parts-honey-and-vinegar vocals.

Hailing from the cultural city of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Grrrl Gang is a rising force in the independent music scene with their infectious melodies, anthemic songs, and electrifying live performances. The power trio, composed of Angee Sentana on guitar and vocals, Akbar Rumandung on bass, and Edo Alventa on guitar, has been making waves in
