Last month, Chicago’s Ganser announced its third LP Animal Hospital (felte) out on August 29, 2025. It’s the follow up to the band’s highly-regarded 2020 LP Just Look At The Sky (produced with Mia Clarke of Electrelane) and its 2022 EP Nothing You Do Matters (produced with Liars’ Angus Andrew). Animal Hospital was announced with the single “Black Sand,” which recieved an enthusiastic response from a number of outlets. Today, the band are sharing a second preview of the record, a track called “Discount Diamonds.”
Composed of Alicia Gaines, Brian Cundiff, and Sophie Sputnik, Ganser has long trafficked in a taut and propulsive blend of no wave, art rock and post punk. Animal Hospital, which revives the band’s relationship with producer Angus Andrew, captures Ganser at their most dynamic, stretching the confines of their sonic boundaries into new territory, testing the elastic limits of their sound. The band remains steadfastly committed to propulsive patterns; drums that pound exacting beats on the heart, pulse quickened by bass and guitars, synths to calm the nerves. Building endless rhythm beneath feet moving in time on a dance floor, or a sidewalk masquerading as one.
Gaines says of the track:
“It’s a bit of a piss-take, isn’t it? There’s always someone up top saying what the kids are doing wrong, always a voice telling you the party’s over. I liked the idea of making a dance track that’s constantly questioning whether dancing’s still allowed. It’s got that suspicious energy, like too much coffee and not enough sleep. There’s humour in it, definitely, but also a bit of that end-of-the-night feeling when the lights come up and you’re not sure where you left your optimism.
