024 marked the 20th anniversary of Last Gang Records but the party continues into 2025 as the independent record label continues to roll out a series of covers from its original artist signings. Today, MNRK’s own Cadence Weapon and Dan Only take on Purity Ring’s “Ungirthed.”
Discussing his cover of “Ungirthed,” Rollie Pemberton, aka Cadence Weapon notes, “When I was asked by Last Gang to contribute to their 20th anniversary compilation, I knew I wanted to transform ‘Ungirthed’ by Purity Ring pretty much right away. Corin and Megan are both fellow Edmontonians and I still remember the excitement I felt when they first came on the scene with that song in 2011. I wanted to channel that spirit of discovery by writing new lyrics over a new version of the beat for that song reimagined by my homie Dan Only. The resulting cover hopefully shares some of the beautiful, transfixing and beguiling DNA of the original.”
“Ungirthed” along with Anand Wilder’s recent take on the New Pornographer’s “Challengers,” will be released as part of a 20th anniversary compilation from Last Gang Records on April 25, along with Maia Friedman’s take on Metric’s “Love Is A Place,” Low Hum’s reinterpretation of Death From Above 1979’s “Romantic Rights,” Alice Ivy’s take on MSTRKRFT’s “Easy Love,” and Dear Boy’s cover of Metric’s “Combat Baby.”
Concurrent with the cover series, has released a series of limited edition 20th anniversary merch items via their shop, along with vinyl re-pressings of Metric’s Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?, Mother Mother’s The Sticks, Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton’s Knives Don’t Have Your Backs and Death From Above 1979’s You’re A Woman, I’m A Machine and The Physical World (Eleventh Anniversary Deluxe Edition) with more to be announced.
