NYC transplant and pop auteur Angélica Garcia recently announced she’s just signed with Partisan Records, and will have a proper debut LP for the label out sometime in 2024. Word of the full-length is still TBA but it will be completely in Spanish. Angélica’s Partisan debut arrived with two twin tracks and double videos for “Y Grito” and “El Que” directed by *UNCANNY (BROCKHAMPTON, Danger Mouse, Black Thought) and filmed in London. Produced by Chicano Batman’s Carlos Arévalo, the music marks this as the first time Angélica sings on an album entirely in Spanish. It is her native language.
The videos open the floodgates for Angélica with a refreshingly universal rhythmic set of songs where heritage snaps into focus in both lyric and disparate sound channeling elements of Yves Tumor, Kate Bush, Karen O, Rosalía, Kali Uchis, and Xenia Rubinos. They offer battle-hardened mirror images of the same difficult and at times terrifying work of healing, with Angélica summoning reinforcements from another realm with the intensity of an exorcism. In fact, Angélica’s vocal performance took such an emotional and spiritual toll that she couldn’t sing for two days after recording. These themes are reflected in the visuals for the singles, too, wherein “Y Grito” represents a battle of the physical while “El Que” represents a battle of the mind.
Angélica Garcia was just added to a string of tour dates alongside the legendary Blonde Redhead with dates in LA, SF and more.
