Texas thrash heavyweights Warbeast recently revealed the upcoming release date for their upcoming full-length album, Destroy. The new album, produced by Philip H. Anselmo and engineered by Stephen “The Big Fella” Berrigan, hits the streets on April 2 via Housecore Records. Destroy was recorded at Anselmo’s Nodferatu’s Lair in May and July 2012 and mixed by Anselmo and Berrigan.
Ghettoblaster caught up with Warbeast vocalist Bruce Corbitt just days after the band completed “The Weed & Speed Tour: West Coast Throwdown in the Year of XIII” with Down to talk about the album.  This is what he said about it…
When did you begin writing the material for your most recent album?
The first stages of the music writing for Destroy started back in the Fall of 2011.  But the bulk of the writing happened from January – June 2012. 
What was the most difficult song to take from the initial writing stage through recording and mixing? Why was it so troublesome?
For me it would have to be the song… “The Day Of…” Mainly because there were a couple of parts that I heard in my head how I wanted to sing them.  But when we actually started recording those parts, they just didn’t turn out like I was hoping they would.  So I had to totally adjust how I wanted to sing those parts.  The reason this happened is because I had never sang any of the songs before we started recording them.  So sometimes it just doesn’t work out like you are hearing them in your head. 
Which of the songs on the record is most different from your original concept for the song?
Again, I would have to say the song “The Day Of…” For the reasons I mentioned above.  But also because that song is about tragic days in American history.  So I wanted to have famous news reports from those events during the ending of the song.  I wasn’t sure going in how to do this… but we decided to just recreate those famous news clips ourselves. 
Did you have any guest musicians play or sing on the record?
Not really as far as playing or singing.  Philip had an idea to change this ending part on the song “Destroy.” So he grabbed a guitar and came up with something right there on the spot.  We liked what he came up with… but I can’t really remember if he actually played any of it on the album.  I think he just showed it to our guitarist and they played it on the recording.  
Now with those old famous news clips parts I mentioned above for the song “The Day Of…”  We did get special guest to speak those parts.  They included Philip Anselmo, Kate Richardson, Mike Williams of Eyehategod and his wife Michelle… also our engineer Stephen “The Big Fella” Berrigan.
Who produced the record? What input did that person have that changed the face of the record?
Philip Anselmo was the producer again for this album.  He has been the producer for all of our recordings so far.  We work so well together that I don’t see that changing on future recordings. 
Is there an overarching concept behind your new album that ties the record together?
Not really as far as lyrical subjects.  But the songs combined together make it all a brutal, relentless assault that is a pure rush of adrenaline from start to finish.  So it does fit with the title of the album in the fact that the album destroys. 
Have you begun playing these songs live and which songs have elicited the strongest reaction from your fans?
Yes we have already played 6 of the 9 tracks live at shows and during tours.  To be honest with you… actually all of the songs have had great reactions so far.  I’ve heard different fans mention they loved one of those song titles after the shows.  Some say they love “Egotistical Bastard” for the catchy chorus and humor in the lyrics.  Some say they loved “Nobody” because it makes them want chant.  Others loved “Nightmares In The Sky” for its speed and brutality.  I’ve heard fans say they loved the songs “Warbeast” and “War Of The Worlds” too for various reasons.  So all of that is obviously a good sign that this new album will please and satisfy our fans.
