Son Lux readies Lanterns, shares song

Son Lux will release Lanterns, his third full-length, on Joyful Noise Recordings on October 29. Lanterns positions Son Lux at the helm of an impressive ensemble of instrumentalists and singers, including Chris Thile (The Punch Brothers), Peter Silberman (The Antlers), DM Stith, Lily & Madeleine, Darren King (Mutemath), Ieva Berberian (Gem Club) and yMusic (Dirty Projectors, Bon Iver).
Meditative but heaving with energy, Lanterns’ songs weave disparate elements into a new world both strange and welcoming. Contrasts find peculiar congruency; Futuristic soul meets ancient sentiment, apocalyptic roars meet intimate whispers. Violins dance over rumbling surges of electronics, sparks of piccolo cascade over tangling synths and saxophones. But throughout Lanterns, voices rise above the custom-built, hybridized orchestra like an opera from an alternate world. The themes that emerge speak to illumination, memory, and rebirth.
As such, Lanterns sits as comfortably next to the compositions of Stravinsky, John Adams, David Lang and Ben Frost, as it does to those of Jamie Lidell, Björk, Flying Lotus, and Radiohead.
