Stomping Grounds: Corey Barhorst of Kylesa (Savannah, GA)

kylesasinglephotoSavannah, Georgia might be an easy-going, Georgia Peach of a city, but it’s also the homebase for Kylesa.  And when bass player Corey Barhorst isn’t slammin’ out some of the crustiest metal riffs south of the Mason-Dixon, he’s ready to hit the beach and avoid the winter.

1. What’s your town’s nickname?
C-port.

2. What’s your nickname for your town?

Slow-vannah, because that’s pace here on anything form walking to getting anything done.

3. Why do you live there?

I live in Savannah because I hate the winter. Savannah’s winter is short and sweet. And it doesn’t get too bad either. Plus there are a lot of great people that live here also.
4. What is your favorite local attraction (monument, park, etc)?

My favorite attraction is the beach, ‘cause face it, who doesn’t like the beach.

5. What is your favorite local event/festival?

My favorite event would have to be the Savannah film festival. Watch some movies then go and crash the after parties.

6. What is the best time of year to be there?

The spring is the best time. It’s not too hot and you can ride your bike while drinking beer (as long as you don’t get caught doing so by the police).

7. Who is your favorite local celebrity/personality?

The bass player from AC/DC lives here.  Although I haven’t met him yet.

8. Where is the best place to drink and what’s their specialty or happy
hour?

The best place to drink is the Jinx. The specialty is getting to know Tony the bartender and sharing a shot  of Wild Turkey and chasing it with a PBR tall boy.

9. Who has the best jukebox (and what’s in it)?

The problem with jukeboxes here is, everywhere that has one has an internet jukebox. And those suck.

10. What is your favorite place to see live music and what was your favorite show there?

Again, the Jinx by far. They have been doing shows there for what seems like forever.   I would have to say that my favorite show there was the Hank III show 2 years ago. Those guys put on an amazing show and the place was packed with everyone buying everyone shots of whiskey.

11. What is your favorite local band?

The local scene here is great. I don’t think anyone would be disappointed with what’s going on here.

12. What is your favorite diner or restaurant and what is their best dish?
kylesavinnievangogos
Vinnie Van Go-Go’s pizza. It’s real basic, just large slices made with what you want on them. And you can drink Spoodies while you wait.

13. What is your favorite record store and what was your best find there?

Savannah doesn’t have a record store, your best bet is the interweb or when bands roll through.

14. What is your favorite local shop?

Kellers flea market. If you have the time to look, you could find some amazing shit there.
I like the savannahunderground.com blog. It’s basically musicians writing about anything from upcoming shows to reviews about local bands and concerts. Plus there is a bunch of bitching too.
