Riding waves of noise out of a Chicago basement, Crown Larks return with their sophomore LP, Population, a heady dose of multi-instrumental, polyrhythmic post punk and psychedelic noise rock that channels the grinding bleakness and dynamic energy of their native city. The record compels both catharsis and close listening, distilling a century of music and four years of touring into a white light explosion of raw energy and innovative production, embracing the freedom and experimentation of the band’s DIY community without sacrificing the direct appeal of personal lyrics and melody.
Composed of primary songwriters Jack Bouboushian and Lorraine Bailey (who have blossomed into true lead singers), drummer Bill Miller, bassist Matt Puhr and collaborators including saxophonist Curt Oren, the four-piece recalls contemporaries like Oneida, Preoccupations, Guardian Alien, and Broadcast – alongside the darkest periods of Sun Ra or Liars, the brutal minimalism of Suicide and This Heat, the surreal lyricism of Dirty Projectors, and the magnetic grooves of Horse Lords and Can.
Population makes a hard left into jagged, polyrhythmic post punk, machine-tooled no wave (Swoon), eccentric art rock and shimmering, hypnotic soundscapes – with a little of the band’s earlier Stooges-inflected, sax-heavy krautrock for good measure.
