Song Premiere | Deaf Club, “Broken Face” Off ‘Debased, A Pixies Tribute’

The band’s bio describes it as “A savage sound bath dripping with sardonicism: a blastbeat-centric hardcore punk assault channeling crust, thrash, and grind (un)sensibilities.” We’ve never believed any differently of the group itself, which has dropped a slew of releases to challenge the senses in its own manner. But I’m getting ahead of myself here because this isn’t just about Deaf Club but what it plays and pays tribute to, and that’s Debased, A Pixies Tribute (Sweet Cheetah Records). While there have been tribute offerings to these musical godlings in the past, this one goes a bit further, benefiting the Border Angels, a nonprofit organization that advocates for human rights, humane immigration reform, and social justice.

The release holds several covers by artists like Chris Broach (Braid), FVRMN, Palm Ghosts, Toilet Rats, Oh Condor, and others, as well as the aforementioned Deaf Club. Ah, Deaf Club, the band which is made up of seminal hardcore musicians who have cut their teeth, hands, and fingers on blood-strewn instruments. Justin Pearson (vocals), Brian Amalfitano (guitar), Jason Klien (bass), Tommy Meehan (guitar), and Scott Osment (drums) often take things into another realm or plane, delivering music that’s sonically abrasive and utterly captivating at the same time. There’s no margin for error as the band delivers its songs with the fiery ferocity of a thousand burning suns.

Today, Deaf Club premieres its cover of the Pixies’ classic, “Broken Face,” originally released on Surfer Rosa back in 1988. Here, the Deaf Club takes the song, runs it through a grinder, experimenting with it much more than the original offering did. The song was recorded by Alex Estrada and Tommy Meehan, mixed and mastered by Brent Asbury, and remastered by Dan Coutant at Sun Room Audio.
