Nik Freitas is set to release his upcoming EP Searching For Device (Park The Van) on September 15. Today he shares the EP’s second single, “Regretfully Yours,” a song about the 24-hour news cycle and social media’s prevalence through our daily existence. “I feel like we’ve created a robot-like culture,” Nik explains. “There is a desensitization with the amount of information coming at us. Death and loss of iconic figures or even people close to us are all anybody is talking about for 24 to 48 hours, and then just like that, it’s forgotten about and replaced with something new that dominates the news cycle. It’s like we’ve forgotten how to grieve, or don’t have time to reflect. It’s almost like the internet has retrained people on how to act or respond to tragedy. Things are being tailored to fit this new sensory attention span too. Music, film and art are being condensed into 30-second clips. The trailer to a movie is more important than the actual full film. It’s like the human being’s attention span can only last 1 minute before it is distracted by something else. I think we all need a good cry.”
The upcoming EP will be his tenth release under his own name. The Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist and producer is a veteran of the indie music world. He spent years on the road as a touring member of Conor Oberst’s Mystic Valley Band and Broken Bells and has collaborated in the studio with music heavyweights The Shins, M. Ward, Maria Taylor, Jenny Lewis etc.
