Vermont-based multi-instrumentalist Lutalo unveils their new single with Lomelda, “Darkeve Duet,” on their new label home Winspear, and announces new U.S. tour dates with Katy Kirby in August. Following the recently shared “Familiar Face,” “Darkeve Duet” reimagines a standout track from Lutalo’s debut EP, Once Now, Then Again, which will see its first-ever physical release with vinyl on June 23rd. On “Darkeve Duet,” Lutalo and Lomelda’s vocals interweave between moments of pristine piano and crystalline guitar, creating an entirely unique atmosphere. “Lomelda was definitely an influence sonically and texturally for Once Now, Then Again,” Lutalo says. “It was a full circle moment to have her being willing to help with this track. I really wanted to be able to see a reimagining of the track, and Hannah did a beautiful job developing her own world around the song. Though it’s familiar, it exists on its own sphere. I want to create music that allows for an experience and this does just that.”
Hannah Reed aka Lomelda adds: “I was excited by the opportunity to find a new song within this already beautiful song. I knew I needed it slower, but everything else that it became was a trial and error process. Listening and patience brought me to this new composition that Lutalo and I got to sing together in the final moments, turning a collage into a duet. Thank you Lu, for this chance.”
It’s this overwhelming potency of modernity that ripples through Once Now, Then Again. Spanning both of Lutalo’s contrasting worlds, the songwriting began in the Twin Cities before being finished in the serene surroundings of Vermont, and both environments leave their mark on Lutalo’s rich and absorbing sound. “I tend to grapple with a lot of existential questioning, I wanted to capture what it feels like to be a twenty-something in this time period, reflecting on our relationship with technology, the Internet, relationships, world governments, housing…all while discovering what it means to be an adult and how our definition of what that looks like begins to shift,” Jones states. “The vision I have for this project is not so much genre-based as it is sound-based, and that sound is just a reflection of me. I didn’t want any boundaries because I’m not trying to replicate anything that’s come before, I only want to be adding to music in some way.”
Surrounding the release of Once Now, Then Again, Jones dazzled audiences through opening slots supporting The Weather Station and Novo Amor, plus a slew of European dates alongside Big Thief. This fall, Lutalo will perform a string of U.S. performances with Katy Kirby. Until then, Lutalo’s world consists of pastures and new beginnings, the search for brightness in spite of all the dark. Across Once Now, Then Again, the boldness of Lutalo’s visual rings clean and true. They might not have the answers, but they know the questions that need to be asked. They remain optimistic in attitude, steadfast in their belief that change can only happen when you believe in a better future.
