Andrew Sa has released “Your Whisper,” the third single from his debut album, American Rough, out June 26th via Bloodshot Records. On “Your Whisper,” Sa’s voice is gentle and easy as he contemplates taking the risk – the deep fall into a committed love. In the song’s closing lines, Sa sings: “Your whisper heavy in my hand // True as a golden band // Waiting for an answer // What am I gonna do?”
Sa says of the song: “‘Your Whisper’ is intentionally very sensual. It’s affirming sex with the windows open full of summer rain – Chet Baker Sings on the record player. Then there’s the ominous heart pangs, memories of a past breakup. Pain only possible by giving over to love. Is it worth falling again? ‘What am I gonna do?’ Hunter Diamond’s saxophone setting the satin bedroom scene – Macie Stewart’s extended technique violin adds bristling tension.”
H.C. McEntire further elaborates, “The heavy-handed presentation of backing vocals was intentional – a production decision to create a sonic field of panned, plural voices that surround the mind in all directions. Sensitivity is king here, intimacy is queen; a daring suggestion to lower our guard and expose motives boldly.”
The accompanying live video for “Your Whisper” was filmed at The Hideout where Sa will play a record release show on June 26th. In addition to The Hideout, Sa also plays record release shows at Union Pool in Brooklyn on June 16th and SPACE in Evanston on June 28th. Following, he’ll support River Shook in Minneapolis and Appleton, play a show at Zebulon in Los Angeles on July 28th, and then round out the fall with additional performances at Americana Fest in Nashville and Souvenirs: 80 Years of John Prine at the Chicago Theatre.
American Rough is an intimate, aching, sweet-toned showcase of country-colored indie-folk songs. Longitudinal and poetic, the album is a cinematic portal into Andrew Sa’s relationships with men, the city of Chicago, and his own pulsing heart. Sa worked with Liam Kazar on early ideas for American Rough and enlisted H.C. McEntire as lead producer along with a robust team of musicians to record with: Luke Norton (piano, guitar), Casey Toll (bass), TJ Maiani (drums), Spencer Tweedy (drums and percussion), Nick Broste (trombone), Hunter Diamond (saxophone), Ivan Pyzow (trumpet), Allyn Love (pedal steel), and Macie Stewart (violin). The team was rounded out with North Carolina-based producer and engineer Missy Thangs who co-produced, engineered and mixed the album.
