Album Stream | Terror Management Band, ‘Austerity Gospel’

Terror Management Band releases its sophomore album, Austerity Gospel, on July 4. The album includes nine new missives of art-house meets blue-collar noise rock from the Floridian quartet.

On Austerity Gospel, the band maintains a healthy distaste of our current social and political realities but travels a more meditative path; where the volume and chaos of Big Box Apocalypsis have been sharpened, honed, and are more biting than ever. This is definitely a record that fans of Flipper, Melvins, and Unwound will find a welcome addition to the musical landscape.

Terror Management Band began in 2018 when Mike Taylor returned to his home state of Florida and reconnected with Kevin Kelley, who just happened to be one of the heaviest drummers in a state swollen with heavy drummers. But St. Augustine is not Tampa, nor Miami, so fortune was indeed smiling upon them when multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Rogers rounded out the lineup on bass.

At the band’s first shows as a three-piece, they spied Alan Mills, and as the only person in their small town who owned a Swans t-shirt, it was necessary he join on second guitar. The band’s initial heave and bludgeon was tempered, but only slightly, by the addition of whatever those chords are called that Alan, a nerd, plays. The songs, however, remain churning, growling things, laughing and crying at this moment in time we’re all sharing.

Did we mention that Terror Management Band has former members of Palatka, Flaws, Young Ruins, Minimum Rage, Deadaires, Dredger, Hey! Tonal, Burl, Liquid Limbs, and The Goddamn Deluge?
