Album Stream | Adored, ‘Songs For Film’

Adored, a duo comprised of brothers Lennon and Christian Nichols, coalesced in 2019. They draw heavily from mid-‘80s new wave, synthpop, and art pop while incorporating tinges of post-punk in their work, but perhaps the most telling of their influences is in their reverence for ‘80s film soundtracks.

Christian and Lennon are both very forward in noting that they are a product of their influences, citing artists such as The Cure, Tears For Fears, Cyndi Lauper–and the Saint Joan of Arc—as sources of muse. The end result is fresh and new, yet warm and familiar. Adored officially launched in March of 2020 with their eponymous debut single, following up with “Midnight Sanctuary” and “Space Club” in 2021. Their forthcoming EP, Songs For Film, is set for release August 31 via Chaotic No Good.

With Songs For Film, Adored deliver big, sweeping cinematic compositions for films that exist only in their insular universe. In fact, the brothers admit that whilst writing for Songs For Film, one would propose an idea for a scene they were envisioning and the pair would work tirelessly to find the companion piece to the scene, both musically and lyrically.

Songs For Film clocks in at just under the twenty-minute-mark and, in that time, spans an array of sounds grabbing from post-punk, synth pop, new wave, and art pop palettes. Poignant pop melodies are doused in shimmering guitars and married with movie-like synth textures, all paired with lyrics about fear, hope, passion, and desire. The landscape and environment of the EP shifts progressively from song to song—an intentional decision the duo made in the record’s sequencing. Upon its opening, the listener may imagine themselves roaming a desolate city just before the crack of midnight, and by the time the final line of the last track rings out, the sun is coming up over the horizon, and something new is afoot. The end is the beginning.

From the jump, Adored were set on self-directing a visual counterpart for each song on their debut. With no connections to the film world, no budget, and a drive to create meaningful art, Christian and Lennon wrote treatments for, storyboarded, filmed, directed, and edited the videos for the first four singles. While one still lingers in their queue, the two plan to wrap the chapter with the final film and compile the collection on a physical medium. But not before the pair venture back out into the real world.

Adored have their sights set on getting back to the road, with intentions of touring the U.S. to promote Songs For Film – this time, the brothers relying on the only two they know they can count on—each other. From the studio to the dance floor to the stage, Adored are out there: chasing a feeling, grabbing at the journey, and documenting the process.

Lennon Nichols says, “Songs For Film is a resurrection of the ’80s. It’s a take at trying to give people nostalgia for a time that they lived through or giving them modern pieces of an era they missed out on. It’s us trying to do it in the most genuine and authentic way possible but with the knowledge of the modern day. Songs for Film Is proving a point, making our mark, and cementing our spot in the industry. It’s giving people a glimpse of the World that is Adored. And, it is only the beginning.”
