Hailing from Austin, Texas, Noise Devoid is a band comprised of several grizzled music veterans and a handful of newcomers to the city’s iconic music scene. According to the group, it formed in 2023 and coalesced around the idea of zagging in a world determined to zig. While many bands were playing harder, tighter, and louder, Noise Devoid looked in the opposite direction, drawing inspiration from the shadowy corners of ambient dark pop and trip-hop.

Rather than relying on the soul and jazz samples that traditionally define the genre, the band builds its sound around classical music motifs, transforming centuries-old compositions into haunting modern soundscapes. The result is a cinematic blend of live trip-hop, dark pop, Brian Wilson-esque harmonies, and atmospheric synthesizers that balance beauty, melancholy, and tension in equal measure.

Today, the band premieres ‘Melt Them Down,’ a track the band releases on August 7 to streaming platforms with the intent of raising money for Giffords organization.

This is what Noise Devoid’s Jeff Nunnally had to say about the effort:

“Since the turn of the century, there have been, to date, 435 incidents resulting in exposure to gun violence in U.S. schools. Desensitized doesn’t begin to do justice to the feeling I have when I read these stories, and I don’t imagine I’m unique that way. We’ve become so inured to these horror stories that they barely even register; except to the students and their parents that bear witness, or worse, are victims of these shootings.

“In 2025, I started on a school project as part of a community service requirement. What began initially as a fundraiser to increase awareness of things that could be done to decrease gun violence took on a life of its own.

“The final straw for me was one particular evening, when news of the assassination of Charlie Kirk made headlines. All shootings are awful, but the constant repeated images from this one made me ill. Never mind the tragic irony of a man who essentially advocated for the occasional school shooting as the price we must pay for our right to wield AR-15s being murdered with by someone who should have never been able to obtain one in the first place. The real horror of that day is there was a school shooting one state over that barely made a dent in the news cycle. A 16-year-old boy somehow got his hands on a .38 caliber revolver and critically injured two other students before turning the gun on himself. Neither incident resulted in any meaningful handgun reform, and the school shooting didn’t make the evening news.

“‘Melt Them Down’ is composed around a haunting melody by the French composer Erik Satie, backed by a trip hop beat and sung by an angry mother. It’s not meant to be joyous; its intent is to resensitize us to just how incredibly awful school shootings are; they are quite literally a thing that should NEVER happen. All proceeds from the sale of this single will be donated to Giffords for sensible gun legislation.
