Alewya Shares Single “Eshi”

Critically acclaimed London-based Ethiopian-Egyptian artist and curator Alewya shares “Eshi.” The song is a deeper cut from ZERO – her debut album set for release on June 26th via Because London Records – and unfolds as an extension of Alewya’s evolving sonic world, adding new depth and texture to the universe she continues to build. Rooted in heritage, the track weaves Ethiopian instrumentation called Masenqo, which gradually intensifies and builds towards a powerful, expansive and chant-led crescendo. “Eshi” follows early singles, “City of Symbols” which features her signature weave of Ethiopian rhythms and underground London beats; and “Night Drive,” a track that marked a rebirth as Alewya shed her old skin and stepped into a new creative era and way of life.

The accompanying video, creatively directed and produced by Yonas Tadesse, Frehiwot Berhane, Tedos Teffera and Alewya, was shot in Lalibela, Ethiopia, during the celebration of Gena – Ethiopian Orthodox Christmas. The beautifully captured visuals reinforce a strong sense of community and culture, both of which are central and defining forces within Aleway’s artistry. When speaking about ‘Eshi’, Alewya notes, “Eshi is rooted in tradition but unbound by it too, which is one of the pillars of ZERO.” “Eshi” not only represents one of the key pillars of ZERO but the auditory landscapes that define Alewya.

With her forthcoming album ZERO, Alewya embodies years of artistic growth into a debut that is deeply personal and sonically expansive. Standing at the forefront of a new creative era, defined by fearless experimentation and cultural fluidity, she steps fully into her power.
