Geckøs Share “El Techno”

Can we consider Geckøs a supergroup of sorts? Possibly. Through the years, all three artists – M. Ward,  Howe Gelb (Giant Sand), and Mark McCausland (a.k.a. McKowski) – have collaborated individually and appeared on each other’s records on several occasions. But it wasn’t until they were all recently in Tucson for a mutual friend’s wedding that the stars aligned and Geckøs were born. Tasked with coming up with a piece of music for the first dance, McKowski settled on a waltz, and, hitherto unplanned, Ward and Gelb joined. That impromptu session ignited a fire, and Geckøs churned out their forthcoming debut LP. Today, the band shares its Spanish-language single “El Techno.”

The first sounds you hear on the debut self-titled album from GECKØS, are, appropriately enough, the first sounds the supertrio ever came up with. It was the day of a wedding in Tucson, Arizona, and M. Ward, Howe Gelb, and Mark McCausland had been tasked with coming up with a piece of music for the ceremony’s first dance. The three knew each other individually — and had all collaborated on each other’s records in the past — but had never tried making music as a group. They’d never actually all been in the same room before. But with a wedding couple in wait, and the dive-bar venue in need of a band, they got to work.

“Wedding Waltz” is the dreamy ballad they came up with — a Southwestern splash of nylon string romance sung in Spanish by Ward — and after the performance that night, one thought occurred to all three simultaneously: Why don’t we make some more? “I think if we had tried to plan it,” McCausland said, “it could never have happened. It’s something that just kind of happened naturally.”

With Gelb based in Tucson, Ward in Portland, Oregon, and McCausland in Omagh, Ireland, the prospect of putting together a full GECKØS album wasn’t a casual commitment. It meant some musical globetrotting was in order — flying back and forth from their home bases as well as to locales like London and Bristol.
