Directed by Sloane White, Votolato’s “Hospital Handshakes” video is a stunning stop animation short that blends the brilliant talents of two highly creative artists. What took painstaking time and thought has resulted in a captivating video for a fan-favorite track from Votolato’s new record.
“I’ve always wanted to make a stop animation video and this was such a fun process of experimentation and creative collaboration,” Votolato tells Noisey.com. “Sloane Alexandra White is an incredibly talented young director from Portland and a creative force of ideas and inspiration. I was drawn to her work with shadow puppets and think she did a great job of capturing a creepy haunted darkness to visually accompany the themes and vibe of the song.”
“I was excited to combine my abilities in stop motion with the talents of Rocky Votolato,” White adds. “I had never collaborated so closely on the vision for a project with a musician before. Each piece of the set and puppets were all made from scratch by hand. The shadow puppets are my favorite element because of the spooky childhood-nightmarish images they can create.”
“Hospital Handshakes” is one of the many standout tracks on Votolato’s critically heralded, 8th studio album, which was produced by former Death Cab for Cutie guitarist Chris Walla (Tegan and Sara, The Decemberists) and features guest collaborators, including his brother Cody Votolato on electric guitar (The Blood Brothers), Eric Corson on bass (The Long Winters), Andy Lum on drums (Craft Spells/My Goodness) and Casey Foubert on Aux instrumentation (Sufjan Stevens).
