NPR has debuted STATS’ new track, “Countach,” off the Brooklyn trio’s upcoming album, Mercy.

As NPR’s Lars Gotrich puts it, the band possesses “the muscle of Black Flag’s weirdo hardcore era and the skronk-jazz chops of King Crimson.” Its gut-level angst and magic-fingers shredding combine into a unique musical voice that’s an equally legit representative for hardcore as for progressive rock. The vocals on “Countach” are delivered by Dave Perlis of the band Hexa and co-host of WFMU’s Night People, providing the song with what Gotrich calls “the sleazeball strut it needs.

The three members of STATS have played in such bands as Aa, Extra Life, Psalm Zero, and Ocrilim, and in projects with members of Dazzling Killmen and Craw. Mercy was recorded at Strange Weather in Brooklyn by former The Men guitarist Ben Greenberg and mastered by Khanate’s James Plotkin (Thou, Merzbow).
