The One With Airplanes and Animals

On this episode: Brian and  Luke call out Sam Sanders and Scott Aukerman for poaching from the Best Song Ever Podcast, then they get into a discussion on the newest episodes of The Bachelorette and season two of Preacher, they touch on artificial intelligence and technology constantly replacing itself, Luke talks about the basic bitches of trees, Brian goes on record saying he has feelings about the Senate health care bill and then pitches his dog themed idea for a Pixar movie, they discuss Luke’s love of folk music and play eight of the best songs you’ll hear all week!

Every week Ghettoblaster feature writers (and dear cousins!) Brian LaBenne and Luke LaBenne bring you fresh new songs with the hopes of introducing you to some that you may consider to be the best song ever.  Both Brian and Luke have no idea what songs the other has picked, so what you are hearing is their genuine reaction to listening to the songs together.  Also, if you enjoy this episode, head to ITunes to subscribe and rate our podcast with the highest rating available to you.

Widowspeak’s gorgeous new album All Yours is out on September 4 on Captured Tracks and the band has given us another hint of what’s to come this week. The duo dropped a new track this week via FADER  entitled “Dead Love (So Still).”

The song is about a relationship the band’s Molly Hamilton had while she was a teenager, she tells FADER, “I wrote an early version of this song when I was 19,” she explained. “It was one of those naive situations where I thought I was with someone and he didn’t, but the energy and emotion I’d invested in our non-relationship still made its inevitable end feel significant. The mood [of the album version] is a lot more lighthearted than the first. I’ve had so many more experiences since then that require letting things go, and I’m a lot more okay with closed doors that I used to be.” FADER describe the track as having an “… optimistic-feeling swirl of twangy, textured guitars and dreamy-as-hell vocals” hailing it as “Another Gorgeous Slow-Burner”.

Widowspeak’s Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas are back with All Yours,  which will be released on Captured Tracks on September 4. From start to finish listeners will be struck by the elegant interweaving of dream-pop and slowcore rock and roll, easygoing melodies and dusty, snaking guitars.  It’s their finest release yet: ten beautiful songs that are refreshingly straightforward yet built from the same well-chosen and deftly-used tools the band has always worked with.

It’s a rare and beautiful thing when a band emerges fully formed, but it makes perfect sense in the case of guitarist Daniel Hindman and keyboardist Sarah Versprille’s Pure Bathing Culture, who today premiere their full-length debut via Pitchfork. The gorgeous record filled with reverb-drenched, soulful, danceable electro-pop musically and lyrically taps into an introspective worship of the natural and psychic mysteries that surround us. Partisan Records will release Moon Tides on August 20 and the band will share songs from the forthcoming album on tour with Widowspeak this fall. The full list of tour dates is below.
