The excitement continues as At The Drive-In shares the third single off the forthcoming album in • ter a • li • a May 5 on Rise Records. Cedric Bixler-Zavala describes the song as “like walking through the hallway in some war-torn ghetto and reading the writing on the wall. When you hear things like, ‘Raise your nithing pole,’ I don’t think anyone will know what that is right away, but when you look it up, it’s this curse. We are going to be victorious. Here’s the fucking head on the stake in front of our army. We’re coming back. It’s reading the writing on the wall. It’s going and keeping your ear to the ground and listening to the heartbeat of young people.”

Expanding on that theme, the band has unveiled an ominous new video directed by Rob Shaw and Damon Locks (who also designed the characters and set) to accompany the single’s release. Using a mix of stop-motion as well as digital animation, the video depicts faceless militaristic figures holding a man captive, as billboards bearing ominous messages flash in and out of view. The final scene is an eruption of chaos as the prisoner sets off an explosion.

Le Butcherettes and At The Drive-In recently paid a visit to Atlanta, Georgia’s The Tabernacle. Photographer David Altherr was there to capture the action. This is what he said about it.

It’s been about 17 years since I last saw At the Drive-In. The show was at the cramped student union at Oberlin College in Ohio. Relationship of Command was less than a year old and my first introduction to the band. This time it was at a crowded Atlanta Tabernacle; originally a church, and also a former House of Blues. After 17 years of listening to ATDI and the various projects that were born following their 2001 breakup, I could appreciate fully what I watched this night. As the house lights went down, I knew that they would not disappoint.

The opening chords “Arcarsenal” started the evening which included 10 songs from Relationship of Command, including “Catacombs,” a bonus track from one of the reissues. The only new song to make the set was “Governed by Contagions,” from their forthcoming full-length, their first in 16 years, which fit seamlessly into the setlist. The stage banter was short and sparse but vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala did let Atlanta know that ATDI would return.

A two-song encore had the crowd in full sing-a-long, including the finale cut, “One Armed Scissor.”

With praise still reverberating from December’s unveiling of “Governed By Contagions,” At The Drive In has issued another clarion call from its first album in 17 years: “Incurably Innocent” is the second track to be released in advance of that record, titled in • ter a • li • a, now available for pre-order and confirmed for release May 5 on Rise Records.

Pitting spacey phaser and thrash-y riffing against a sidewinder hook and siren wail, “Incurably Innocent,” described by vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala as “a song about sexual abuse and being able to finally speak out,” reveals additional facets of the kaleidoscopic in • ter a • li • a (Latin for “among other things”). Produced by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Rich Costey at Hollywood’s Sound Factory, the 11-song 41-minute in • ter a • li • a picks up where 2000’s Relationship of Command left off… and rockets off into myriad other trajectories as unpredictable as they are intense.
in • ter a • li • a’s release will be immediately followed by a new series of live dates beginning in At The Drive In’s native El Paso, Texas and including headline dates at the likes of the Bill Graham Civic Center in San Francisco, the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and more. Le Butcherettes will support on the new dates (below in BOLD). For further information, updates and tickets, go to www.atthedriveinmusic.com/tour/.

At The Drive In has made good on its promise to release new music before the close of 2016. “Governed By Contagions,” from the band’s forthcoming full length album produced by ORL and Rich Costey, is the first new song written and recorded by At The Drive In since the 2000 release of its landmark third album Relationship Of Command. It is now available as a free download at atthedriveinmusic.com.

Following on the recent announcement of its upcoming Reading and Leeds Festival appearances, At The Drive In has confirmed a first handful of headline dates for 2017. The shows run March 20-29 and cover cities where the band was forced to cancel in June 2016 due to health concerns regarding Bixler-Zavala’s vocal cords.

At The Drive In is Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Paul Hinojos, Tony Hajjar and Keeley Davis. (Founding member Jim Ward parted ways with the band on the eve of the band’s reunion tour.)
