Stomping Grounds: Scott Martin (Boyfrndz) on Austin, Texas

Boyfrndz

Boyfrndz, a band that began in 2010, shortly after the collapse of We The Granada, a band in which guitarist/vocalist Scott Martin and bassist/vocalist Joseph Raines had cut their teeth, released their latest, All Day Pass  on September 11 via Spora Records.  Kicking off with the droning fade in of “Colts”, All Day Pass begins with Martin’s vocals mirroring his ringing guitar notes and Aaron Perez’s thunderous toms and Raines’ lithe bass playing drive the song’s syncopated rhythm through multiple time signature shifts over the course of the tune’s 4:11 duration. Elsewhere, passages touch upon influences as broad as Jane’s Addiction, Sonic Youth and the Animal Collective, creating a captivating hybrid of technical precision and ethereal melodic haze.
Ghettoblaster caught up with Boyfrndz guitarist, vocalist Scott Martin the day of All Day Pass’ release as he readied the band to leave their stomping grounds in Austin, Texas for a U.S. tour.  Here is what he told us about The vide at The White Horse, Danny Trejo and Barton Springs Pool…
What’s your town’s nickname?
Bat City.
What’s your nickname for your town?
“little L.A.”
Why do you live there?
Great city, despite the recent overcrowding. Unlike a lot of people here, I actually enjoy going to see live music, which is abundant. My bandmates are also here, which is helpful.
Did you grow up there? If not, what brought you there?
No, I’m originally from San Antonio, TX. Joseph and I moved up here with our old band.
What’s the weirdest thing that has ever happened to you there?
Danny Trejo borrowing my cellphone when I was waiting on him at Uchiko. That was pretty unusual.
What is your favorite local attraction (monument, park, etc)?
Probably Barton Springs Pool.
What is your favorite local event or festival?
Fun Fun Fun fest probably.
What is the best time of year to be there?
Spring or Fall, Summers are pretty brutal.
Who is your favorite local celebrity?
Matthew Mcconaughey for sure.
Where is the best place to drink and what’s their specialty or happy hour?
The White Horse. No standard happy hours that I know of, but always a rad vibe. Our friends own it, Dennis actually also plays in one of Aaron’s (our drummer ) other bands, East Cameron Folkcore.
Who has the best jukebox (and what’s in it)?
LaLa’s maybe, it’s just oldies.
Do you play music there? If so, where is your favorite place to play?
No live music at LaLa’s.. We love Red7. Mohawk. Beauty Ballroom was also a good time.
Does where you live influence your music?
Not in a direct way, but I think the people that live here do. Our friends specifically.
What is your favorite place to see live music and what was your favorite show there?
It used to be Emos, but the Parish is also awesome. Super bass heavy mix. My favorite show there was definitely Portugal. The Man a couple years ago. It was before they added the second guitar guy. They really tore it up.
What is your favorite local band?
Feuding Fathers, or Equals, or Roger Sellers. There are a few gems. It’s hard.
What is your favorite diner or restaurant and what is their best dish?
Elizabeth St. Cafe. So good. Probably the sticky rice.
What is your favorite record store and what was your best find there?
End of an Ear.
What is your favorite local publication (alternative weekly, zine, website or blog)?
mm, Misprint Magazine.
What is your favorite local shop?
That’s pretty general. I like Stag Menswear. If that’s where you’re going with that..
If you could live anywhere else, where would that be?
Nowhere now.
