Best Boys, which consists of Joe Rittling and Aaron Levison, are childhood friends who grew up together in a small Vermont town. Both began playing music and making art in each other’s basements and backyards before life took them to opposite coasts. With Joe still in Vermont and Aaron now based in Oregon, their creative connection has remained intact across the miles. Rittling handles vocals and keys while Levison, a multi-instrumentalist and engineer, helps shape the sonic palette, melding classic influences with a modern ear.
Best Boys emerged from years of artistic collaboration, evolving from Rittling’s previous solo project Black Fly into something more melodic, focused, and lyrically driven. Their songs are cinematic and conversational, often centered on themes of travel, lost love, and the tender weirdness of growing older. Think road trip mixtapes, missed connections, old gas station maps, and voicemail messages you never deleted.
Coming off their latest EP Ride Out, “Apartment” offers listeners a slow build that feels effortless with rolling drum beats and enchanting keys. Today, Best Boys have dropped the video accompanying the single,
Best Boys on the song and video: “‘Apartment’ is a song about being bewildered by the choices you make. It’s about living in the head state before acceptance, stuck in a cycle of reflection and deflection. The video tries to visually explore that metaphorical liminal space and the surreal feeling it imparts.”
