With a winning combination of drag, standup comedy, opera, classical and pop music, Toddy is redefining the very idea of pop stardom on their debut album Always (Light Organ Records), which they’ve announced today for a June 21 release. In conjunction, Toddy has shared the record’s second single, “2 On The Go,” with a video from director Lester Lyons-Hookham, which captures Toddy in full ‘9 to 5’.
Toddy recorded Always tracks at 604 Studios in Vancouver with producers Louise Burns and Kevvy Maher (Carly Rae Jepsen, Fake Shark). Fascinated with how “rock, opera, and pop music can be intertwined,” Toddy repurposes their classical education to create a brilliant and engaging collection of tracks on Always, which weaves through a range of high-energy, glammy influences: Kylie Minogue, Christine And The Queens, KISS, David Bowie, Annie Lennox, Lily Allen, and Adele. “So much of artmaking is play and channeling childhood joy,” Toddy says of their creative spirit. “I wanted to bring that into the art that I made while tapping into the youthful essence of not being afraid to fail and not being afraid to try new things.”
“2 On The Go” is a percussive, French pop-inspired number, in which Toddy considers the space between instant love and heartbreak… “What happens in the middle I don’t think is spoken about a lot. It’s a cheeky track about the middle conflict arising. I really love the play in that song between the lyrical turmoil and its upbeat sound.”
