New York City-based, Miami-raised musician, vocalist, and electronic composer Tama Gucciaka Kymani Floyd returns today with a new video for his breakout single and dance floor anthem, “Challenge,” from his 2021 Almost Blue EP (Sinderlyn). The track is about the empowering nature of the dancefloor and, Kymani says, “I challenge people to stop worrying about what other people are doing. Just focus on yourself. Go and dance and have fun and show up to places with a purpose of having fun and doing it for nobody else but yourself. That’s the challenge.”
The Britney Spears “I’m A Slave 4 U”-inspired visual was directed by Jonathan Qualtere and Kymani notes, “This video is so special to me, with so many pioneers in my community featured in it as well! It’s sexy, inspiring and fun.”
A pop star of his own design, Tama Gucci gives us everything we need with innovative skill and finesse. Using his expansive vocal range and innovative spirit, Tama Gucci’s music allows us to enjoy the world through a lens that curiously explores longing and romance in the digital age. The artist’s success covering pop songs for his online cult following led him to become a staple performer in the city’s emerging underground queer scene. Simultaneously nostalgic and futurism-centered in his artistic sensibility, Tama Gucci’s music sounds like a distant memory from a rave you’ve never been to. Blending Jungle and Miami Bass, his music bridges the gap between his Jamaican identity and fascination with 90s breakbeat music.
