Squid Shares “Cro-Magnon Man”

Squid presents a bold new video for Cro-Magnon Man,” the standout single from their acclaimed new album, Cowards (Warp Records), released last month. The track has quickly become a live favorite across their sold-out UK tour dates. It features vocals from guitarist Louis Borlase alongside Clarissa Connelly, Tony Njoku, and Rosa Brook.

The video was created by BAFTA-winning writer and director Rory Alexander Stewart (known for his short films LiarGood GirlIn the Grass and Wild Horses) alongside production company CANADA (who have produced music videos for artists such as Rosalía, Battles, Beck and Tame Impala). Featuring frenetic, quick cuts of rollerblader Neil Nelly Ingall and a puppet made of bones, Ingall carves through a dimly lit cityscape on a surreal journey combining physicality, distortion, and emotional texture.

Director Rory Alexander Stewart on the video: “Squid’s music inspires a kind of darkly humorous sincerity that, let’s be frank, could only be represented by combining the two great art-forms born of the 20th century; cinema and rollerblading.”

Cowards is an album about evil. Consisting of nine stories punched by vantablack comedy, Squid’s third album sees the band — Louis Borlase, Ollie Judge, Arthur Leadbetter, Laurie Nankivell, and Anton Pearson — simultaneously growing in scope and returning to basics, exploring textures of folk, kosmische, psychedelia, jazz and electronics. Cowards solidifies Squid as among the most experimental new voices to emerge in British guitar music in the 2020s (Pitchfork) and has earned the quintet some of the most glowing reviews of their career.

Squid have long been praised for their expansive must-see live show. After their biggest UK show to date at Roundhouse, the band will embark on a full North American tour this spring. A full list of dates is below and tickets are on sale now.
