Pile are back with a new single “Scaling Walls” out today from Exploding In Sound Records. The striking new track arrives just ahead of the band’s upcoming North American tour, which will see them performing with Stuck, Speedy Ortiz, Moontype, and more.
“Scaling Walls” follows Pile’s latest full-length, All Fiction (which was released in February to critical acclaim). Recorded during the same sessions, “Scaling Walls” continues in the record’s inventive direction, building from plaintive verses into a towering climax that utilizes sharp guitars and vocalist/guitarist Rick Maguire’s agile voice in equal measure.
Guitarist/vocalist Rick Maguire discussed the new song saying:
“It was a satisfying song to work on because the subject matter revolves around trying to separate what’s worthy of my energy and what’s essentially spinning my wheels, and while I had labored over the parts for a while on my own, once I brought it to the band it became pretty apparent how it was supposed to go. So for a thing that’s trying to explore the topic of uncertainty and overthinking, it was nice for it to come together quickly and with confidence.”
All Fiction feels like the start of a new chapter for Pile, leaning into the band’s keen sense of atmosphere and experimentation to create some of their most sonically ambitious work to date. The album’s sessions were especially productive and luckily for the listener, these other recordings, like “Scaling Walls,” are now starting to see the light of day. After sixteen years as a band, Pile is still making visceral and essential music, and still one of the most reliably fantastic live acts around. Listen to “Scaling Walls” and catch them on tour this Fall, see full itinerary below.
