Memphis rock/alt-country band Lucero releases the wistful and electric new single “Buy a Little Time” from their upcoming album Should’ve Learned by Now (Liberty & Lament/Thirty Tigers), out February 24. The song is accompanied by a music video filmed during soundcheck. The band has also announced an early 2023 winter tour across the Southeast and Midwest, with stops in Indianapolis, Charlotte, Orlando, New Orleans and more.
“‘Buy a Little Time’ was written right after we recorded When You Found Me, and if it had been written a little earlier, it could’ve gone on that record or even on Among the Ghosts,” explains bandleader Ben Nichols. “It sticks out on Should’ve Learned by Now because of that. It has a meaner sound than the rest of the album, but it was too good to leave off the record.” He continues, “It’s a cliche, but I feel like most folks (myself included) feel like if they had just a little more time, they could make everything work out. It’s probably not true, and that makes this song a little bittersweet. Also got a chance to throw in a line about my daughter. We stumbled across the piano breakdown in the last chorus by accident while we were recording Cory Branan’s excellent backup vocals. It’s one of my favorite parts on the record.”
Lucero’s 12th studio album, Should’ve Learned by Now finds the band embracing their trademark punchy driving rhythms and punk-rooted guitar licks after exploring darker, more atmospheric sonic landscapes on their two previous releases. A reflection of a band that knows itself, the new album recognizes the past in its sound and content while leaving the door wide open to the future and the lessons still in store. The debut single “One Last F.U.” was hailed by Rolling Stone, who praised the “heavy dose of punk-rock attitude” and declared “’One Last F.U.’ has the defiant, sneering energy of Lucero’s loudest recordings.”
