Los Angeles-based Jenny O. shares her latest single and video “The Natural World“ out now on Mama Bird Recording Co. The video was filmed by cinematographer and longtime collaborator Sam Gezari in the coastal redwoods of Northern California on Yurok and Wiyot ancestral lands.
“The Natural World” follows the single “Prism” which was released this Spring. They are the first tracks released from a new album coming in early 2023. The songs find Jenny pushing further—past the epiphany and acceptance explored on 2020’s New Truth—into an illuminated space that celebrates our multitudes. These are songs of affirmation and activation.
Commenting on the song and video Jenny says:
I believe in love and curiosity, I am fascinated with the natural world. This is a declaration of wonder and reverence for the living Earth. As we phase out fossil fuels, the way through the climate crisis is by the regeneration of this planet’s incredible natural systems. This song is for alignment with life on Earth (including one another). The future requires us to consider everything and everyone; love and curiosity are key.
I wanted to film The Natural World video in the redwoods of California because it’s the most alive place I know. Old-growth forests are the best carbon-capture technology in existence. I wanted a futuristic vision of a flourishing Earth – what if we try, what if we get it right? We imagine, and we are presented, in film and literature, with every version of dystopia- dusty, bleak, and sinister… I think it’s important to envision the future we want so we can fight for it. What future are we calling forth? What could it look like?
Jenny O.’s new music is perhaps better described in visual or medicinal effects than in any genre-based terms, maybe by the bursts of color the songs evoke, and the spiritual revelations chanted in stacks of harmony. But you can call it rock, if you want, or pop… sometimes r&b…
Jenny O. has also just announced an East Coast trip to support Violent Femmes on October 27 in Nashville at Marathon Music Works and October 28 in Atlanta at The Eastern (tickets). Those dates will follow an October Residency at Permanent Records Roadhouse in Los Angeles with performances on October 19 and October 26. More residency details are available HERE.
