Japanese Breakfast shares a live performance video of “Better The Mask,” a stand-out from her recently released original video game soundtrack for Sable, out now via Sony Music Masterworks.
Of the song, Zauner says “I wrote ‘Better the Mask’ during lockdown. To pass the time, I found myself turning to the piano, practicing intently for the first time in years, and putting together what would become my favorite song I’ve ever written. ‘Better the Mask’ also features the first string arrangement I devised solely on my own.”
“In this video, which was shot by Adam Kolodny at Electric Lady, Quartet 121 brings that arrangement to life with Molly Germer and Julia Suh on violin, Lena Vidulich on viola and Thea Mesirow on cello,” she continues.
Sable’s 32-track soundtrack, featuring instrumental and vocal music written by Michelle Zauner, finds the musician, director and author making new explorations into ambient and experimental music. The resulting soundtrack is as breathtaking and otherworldly as the game itself. The vinyl edition of the soundtrack, which will arrive as a 2-LP disc set in gatefold packaging in Spring 2022, is available for preorder now. In addition to the standard edition, an artist exclusive edition is also now available to preorder on Japanese Breakfast’s official merch store and various color variants will be exclusive to retailers including Newbury Comics, Light in the Attic and Vinyl Me Please.
Japanese Breakfast’s critically acclaimed new album, Jubilee, is out now via Dead Oceans. Michelle Zauner’s New York Times Best Selling memoir, Crying In H Mart, soon to be adapted for the screen by MGM’s Orion Pictures, is out now via Knopf.
