Damien Jurado followed up his 2019 debut album for Mama Bird Recording Co. with the announcement of What’s New, Tomboy? earlier this month and today is sharing a new song from the album with “Alice Hyatt”. Where In the Shape of a Storm stripped back everything to reveal an artist at his most intimate, What’s New Tomboy? sees Jurado stepping back into a more fleshed out sound with his voice and rhythm section at the fore. On “Alice Hyatt”, the sparse instrumental elements add a deeper poignancy to Jurado’s lyrics. The new song could be read as a dour one, eliciting a feeling of misinterpretation, missing something, or someone. That is until the last few moments before the final organ line chimes in and Damien cuts the melancholy by singing, “I was busy, being myself.” Previously, Jurado shared album opener “Birds Tricked Into The Trees”, which has all the trappings of a classic–a beautifully woven story to lose yourself in as Jurado pleadingly searches for some truth in earthly imperfections.
