Andy Shauf presents a music video for “Halloween Store” — one of “the best two songs on [Norm]…grounded by acoustic guitar but [featuring] lush instrumental breaks and repeating hooks” (Variety) – and announces a 2024 solo tour. Now, with Halloween just around the corner, Shauf shines a flashlight on the much-adored Norm standout. The hand-drawn “Halloween Store” video by animator Margaret Bialis and creative director Véra Haddad is charming and timely, a perfect visual accompaniment for the fast-approaching holiday.
Haddad comments, “‘The Halloween Store’ video is a real central Canada/midwestern-drab-inspired visualization of Andy’s sonic storytelling and dry humor. This song has great scenic details we got to explore through this records key characters ‘You’ and ‘Norm.’ ‘Halloween Store”s autumnal spirit informed our choice to animate physically with paper and ink — a little bit of a nod to the tradition of ‘Inktober’ where artists take on the challenge to draw everyday of the month.”
Bialis adds, “I think design-wise I was inspired by the warmth and hominess of looking forward to Halloween when you were a kid (hopefully shown with the film being animated on paper with colored pencils), juxtaposed with how off-putting and cold liminal spaces can feel. I also thought it was important to have some charming moments throughout the film, but ultimately leave the viewer with the impression that maybe this Norm guy isn’t the most savory of characters. Maybe he’s more of a monster than the monsters we see at the Halloween store!”
Next spring, Shauf will embark on a North American solo tour, bringing his beloved live set to a slew of intimate venues in major cities and smaller markets, including Boston, Brooklyn, Asheville, Evanston, Big Sur, Portland, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Seattle, and more.
