Young Fathers released their third album Cocoa Sugar (Ninja Tune) on March 9. The record—produced, written and recorded by the band throughout 2017—is Young Fathers’ biggest commercial and critical success to-date. Featuring the singles “In My View,” “Lord” and “Toy,” Cocoa Sugar builds on the widespread acclaim of their two previous full-length records: 2014’s Mercury Prize-winning DEAD and 2015’s White Men Are Black Men Too.
Today, Young Fathers released the video for their latest single, “Toy.” The video sees the band reignite their creative relationship with renowned Stink Films director SalomonLigthelm, who collaborated with the band on 2014’s “Mr Martyr.” Ligthelm approached the trio with the video concept after hearing the track. He states:
“The tone of the track is so visceral and abrasive, which I think marries the political subject matter perfectly. I honestly just really like the idea of seeing dictators behaving like spoilt little children – pissed with the world because things aren’t going their way. Looking at the political climate of our time, I’d say truth is certainly stranger than fiction.”
