“Brother Sam,” the new video Brother Roy is a quirky composite of vintage footage, a tapestry of unrelated items woven together to create a subtly sinister, mystery-tinged, hallucinogen-inspired story.
Of the song, Brother Roy says:
“A vial of 300 hits of LSD made it way from NOLA to NYC last spring. Along the way it had left a trail of psychedelia and rave reviews of the wonder drug. On a Wednesday afternoon last spring myself and a few other friends took the acid in the morning and spent the day under the guidance of our musical shaman Brother Sam. He guided us through a musical journey that snowballed, picking up different people along the way. Sam took us on a psychedelic boat ride through the jungle to capture the allusive ‘Duck Faced Man’ and bring him back alive to NYC where we could channel his great spirit into the song that would become ‘Brother Sam.’”
Brother Roy, who is a sideman in fiddler Phoebe Hunt’s band The Gatherers, just completed a tour with acclaimed folkster Sarah Jarosz, and released his brilliant solo debut, Last Man Standing, on November 10.
