Yonatan Gat will release a new mini-album, Physical Copy, on September 18 via Joyful Noise Recordings.
Recorded during an inspired three-hour session with Steve Albini at Chicago’s Electrical Audio Studios, the release sees Yonatan and collaborating drummer Gal Lazer focus on the rawer, more energetic side of their music. The first single — or the record’s side A — is “0,” which consists of five short tracks crossfaded into one and growing in intensity towards a climax. You can stream the track where it premiered with BrooklynVegan or via Soundcloud.
Physical Copy comes as a follow-up to this year’s highly-praised Director, but Gat & Lazer do not rely on the formula that worked for their last release. Instead, they explore different territories, moods and styles, packing plenty of complex and dynamic material into the mini-album. Lazer’s hectic drum grooves are spastic and lightning-fast, anchored by Sergio Sayeg’s innovative gliding bass, while Gat’s unparalleled cross-genre guitar blends in and out – improvised, unpredictable and unparalleled. The idea was to capture the rave-like explosive beats of electronic music while using only one guitar, bass, and massive drums.
Inspired to create a “physical copy” of electronic music, the trio and Albini achieved a truly physical sound – a fully-analog live document of a band in its prime. Physical Copy will be available for free download and on 10-inch vinyl, which is currently available for pre-order.
Yonatan and his band will embark on a U.S. tour around the release of Physical Copy, sharing stages with an aptly versatile mix of artists that includes Moroccan trance band Innov Gnawa, Mexican cumbia band Savila, and legendary American guitarist Bill Orcutt.
