Courtney Barnett returned to the U.S. last month to open for Blur, providing pure rock and roll magic for audiences at the Hollywood Bowl and Madison Square Garden. While in New York she stopped by the CBS studios to play three songs off her critically acclaimed debut LP Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit for the CBS This Saturday Morning crew. Barnett performed her breakthrough hit “Avant Gardener” as well album favorite “Dead Fox” and current single “Nobody Really Cares If You Go To The Party”. She also sat down with host Anthony Mason to discuss her writing process and how she deals with her newfound success.

TV audiences were also treated to a full live performance on Saturday night with the airing of the historic Austin City Limits taping. The six-song set is a great introduction to her signature style: straightforward, four-chord crunch, mixing witty, often hilarious, occasionally even heartbreaking observations with unflinching self-assessment.  Aided by her tight band featuring bassist Bones Sloane and drummer Dave Mudie, she brought the ACL set to a crashing close with the crowd-favorite single “Pedestrian at Best,” proving she’s nothing of the sort, but one of the most distinctive and compelling new voices in modern rock.

While in Nashville over the summer, Barnett and her band stopped by the Third Man Records studio to record two tracks with Jack White. The recording took place over the course of an afternoon in June and is now available as a vinyl 7″. Barnett recorded “Boxing Day Blues Revisited” (the solemn reprise to “Boxing Day Blues” from her debut LP), which tugs at your heartstrings despite the singers’ clear and apparent apathy. “Shivers,” the Roland S. Howard-penned, Nick Cave-crooned nihilistic – and quintessentially Australian – ballad, makes for a perfect B-side antidote. More details can be found here.
Back home Courtney Barnett is taking the Australian music awards season by storm. The 27 year old has been nominated for 8 ARIA awards, the most of any other artist and she recently won every single category she was nominated in at the Australian Independent Music awards.
