This Friday, Daptone releases their much-anticipated live compilation, The Daptone Super Soul Revue Live at the Apollo, in a 20th-anniversary celebration of the record label. The album features performances by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings,Charles Bradley, Saun & Starr, Antibalas, The Budos Band, Menahan Street Band, and the Como Mamas at New York’s famed Apollo Theater.
Recorded in a three-night stint at the legendary venue, The Super Soul Revue captures the joy and formidable talent of Daptone. Strong rhythmic sections, gritty yet soaring vocals, and impeccable improvisation showcase the label in a moment of celebration, a decade under their belts as the purveyors of soul music in the 21st century. James Brown’s own iconic performance at the theater seems to course through performers Charles Bradley, himself a Brown impersonator, and Sharon Jones, who covers the fellow August, GA resident’s “There Was a Time.” Now, like the Godfather of Soul, every performer here can say they, too, have a classic soul album recorded at the Apollo.
The physical live album includes a 3xLP gatefold with 48-page booklet featuring both on-stage and backstage photos by Isaac Sterling and Jacob Blickenstaff.
